Understand the risk of having points on your driving license.

Even when you’ve paid the fines and the dust has settled, you might find that your insurance company has hit you with a premium increase as a result of your traffic violation. Although driving violations don’t always cause rate increases, it’s a general rule of thumb that you will experience a slight price increase after a moving violation.

For better or for worse, the Department of Motor Vehicles maintains a permanent record of your driving history. However, insurance companies don’t use these violations against you after their chargeable period. If you drive, you’ve probably heard about a “license point system.” Though both the DMV and insurance companies use point systems, they are different and separate from each other. The number of points needed for license suspension varies widely across the country. In Pennsylvania, you only need 6 points to warrant a suspension.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) uses a point system to track your behavior on the road. Most moving violations will put points on your driving record. Some typical violations and the points they carry, include:

  • Failure to obey authorized person directing traffic — 2 points
  • Violation of restriction on driver’s license (wearing glasses, etc.) — 2 points
  • Failure to stop for a red light — 3 points
  • Improper passing at a bridge or tunnel — 3 points
  • Following too closely (tailgating) — 3 points
  • Failure to stop for a stop sign — 3 points
  • Illegal U-turns — 3 points

The good news is that for every 12 consecutive months after the date of your last offense that you drive without a traffic conviction, you can get 3 points taken off your record. However, keep in mind that most convictions stay on your record for 5 years from the date of the conviction.
